How to make a trendy cushion

First Video - First Blog

I've been playing with fabric since I was knee-high to the proverbial grasshopper.

Not that it was 'in the family' because there wasn't anyone to watch or to help. We did make a tabbard in primary school but I don't think that's what gave me the love. I have a few more fabric memories.

I remember making a bag out of some mustard yellow striped fabric. I've no idea where it came from! I had sewn three sides and put on a little pocket and I was really proud of it. I'd taken it to my Nana's house ( I guess to show it off) and my cousins were there. Janet told me that 'real sewers' put the seams on the inside! and she turned my bag inside out.

It did look nicer, but the pocket was upside down. Generally I was dissatisfied with the whole item now something simple had been pointed out to me. All I can say is that it didn't put me off.

I was about 14 when my best friend, Ang, and I went to a disco. The trend of new romantics was my era and it was the fashion to wear kilts with sashes. In my head I can see a Scottish country dancing outfit - I can't remember why it was fashionable but we wanted one.

Ang's mum had a sewing machine and took up the skirts, used the excess fabric to make a sash and I was hooked. She was so skillful as the fabric whizzed through the machine and the hem was perfectly straight. I'm guessing before she had kids she worked for Dewhirst's but I can't say for certain. I pinned and sewed on Adam and the Ants badges and we thought we were chocolate.

Those are my first fabric memories. I bought my first machine from my mum's Grattan catalogue, £99.99, and I paid for it working in Woolworth's on Saturdays. There was a monthly magazine with 2 patterns every month. I taught myself to sew using the magazine and have been sewing ever since.

Which brings me to today (i'm sure we'll have more memories another day)

I've been using my phone to take some videos of me sewing, thinking about sewing, finishing the sewing and planning the next sewing project. I've uploaded my first sewing video to You Tube.

It's a cushion I made, 3 actually, to go in my newly decorated living room.

I love pinterest and saw the perfect cushion... anyway, really you should watch it.
